  • Types of Marine Survey

  • Pre Purchase Marine Survey - A full report on the construction & condition of the vessel including hull, machinery, stern gear, superstructure, internal fit out, safety equipment, documentation etc. The boat is measured (boats are sometimes shorter than stated). This type of survey needs to be "out of the water". Non destructive testing is used to determine steel thickness. Any points that would be a Boat Safety Scheme non-compliance are identified. Any urgent & non-urgent recommendations are separately listed. A valuation is included.
  • Hull Only Marine Survey - Describes construction & condition of the hull & stern gear with a detailed inspection for corrosion and damage. Nb older hulls can be expected to have a degree of wastage & once a vessel reaches a certain age it will invariably either have been overplated or need overplating. A vessel needing overplating is not necessarily to be avoided, if the boat is in otherwise good condition then overplating could be well worth doing but it needs to be costed & considered carefully before proceeding.
My present boat was bought ( at a very reasonable price) after a surveyor had found the bottom to need overplating.

  • Valuation - Gives an unbiased informed opinion of the open market value of the boat, does not imply any warranty against defects.
  • Damage Reports - Reports on any specific damage to assist with repair quotes or insurance claims.
  • Machinery Reports - reports on condition of machinery when dismantled for survey.
  • Boat Safety Certification - Examinations for Boat Safety Certificates for private, commercial & hire boats.
  • Insurance

I carry £500,000 professional indemnity insurance for each individual job and £5,000,000 public liability insurance.

    Costs

Each individual job is quoted for before acceptance & will depend on expected condition of vessel, size, age etc. Prices quoted include travelling & no VAT is charged. As a rough guide a full pre purchase survey of a narrow boat of between 50 & 60 ft in average condition would be charged at £500.
Nb Docking, slipping or craning the boat out of the water is the responsibility of the client but the surveyor can advise or arrange this.
